Scotland Road Traffic Injury Statistics 2022

In 2022, Scotland reported 5,621 road traffic casualties, marking a 10% increase compared to 2021. Among these, 173 were fatalities—an alarming 32 more than the previous year—and 1,776 were serious injuries. Non-built-up roads, where speeds exceed 40 mph, accounted for 72% of fatal collisions. Tragically, children comprised 10% of all casualties, with 3 fatalities and 176 serious injuries.

Young adults (16-24 years) experienced nearly double the casualty rate of the general population, with 1.78 casualties per thousand population. The economic cost of road collisions in 2022 was estimated at £1.1 billion, underscoring the urgent need for improved road safety measures and awareness campaigns.

These statistics reveal a pressing need for action to make Scotland’s roads safer for all users. Enhanced infrastructure, stricter regulations, and public education can play a vital role in reversing these concerning trends. Let’s work together to make Scotland’s roads safer!
